For many years - decades even, we have been waiting for the automated "smart"
house - a house that is as technically advanced as our automobiles. For
decades, we have been able to remotely lock and unlock our car doors, raise
and lower our car windows, adjust temperatures for different parts of the car
seating areas, and even clean the back and front windows.
Why can't we do that with our houses? Why are our homes dumb?
Why are most homes still living in the tech dark ages? Gurus and
tech-evangelists have long been promising the smart home - the automated home
with devices that talk to each other, with appliances and central home
systems that can be controlled from a home dashboard or over the internet.
Except for a few hobbyists and early innovators, most homes today are still
stupid.
However, with the arrival of the new third home wireless network, this is
beginn... (more)
If you ever had the foresight in 1970 to wonder along what sequence of events
wireless technologies would start penetrating society, you probably would not
have started first with high quality voice networks, then followed with high
speed data-networks and finally ended with low data rate, low duty cycle
simple sense and control networks. Most likely you would have suggested a
sequence the other way around: let's start "slow and easy" with sense and
control networks (sending temperature information every 5 minutes and control
our heaters or air conditioners); then you may have gu... (more)

How ultra low power wireless networks and energy harvesting are going to make
our planet a better place to live.
Increasingly, we rely on networks of sensors and controllers to make our
lives more convenient. Sensors in the home can help control temperature –
sensors in an office building can help maintain security and ensure that
lights are turned off when there are no humans present. Even our remote
controls that we use to turn on our TVs and home entertainment systems are
essentially sense- and control elements... (more)
In a SMART home, control devices and monitoring sensors throughout the house
are wirelessly connected to each other and a central control station such as
a set top box. This box in turn can talk to the outside world by a cable or
Internet connection. These devices and sensors can include home security
systems, home health monitoring, entertainment such as music, TV and video;
environmental controls for heating and air conditioning, location awareness
(who is where in the home), watering plants, feeding pets, and many others.
These services in turn can be monitored and controlled... (more)
